Henry I, Duke of Brabant, ordered the first Romanesque parish church on the site of St. John's Cathedral in 's-Hertogenbosch around 1220. Reconstruction in Gothic style began in 1340. Alart du Hamel designed the Holy Sacrament Chapel from 1485 to 1488, and Jan Heyns replaced him in 1488. Construction finished around 1525, though the infobox says 1530.

The style is Brabantine Gothic, described as the zenith of that style in the Netherlands. The church is 377 feet (115 m) long and 203 feet (62 m) wide, and the tower is 240 feet (73 m) high. A Romanesque tower base was kept, so the nave was built shorter than planned.

A fire in 1584 destroyed the roof, organ and central tower. Napoleon restored the church to Catholics in 1810. It became a minor basilica in 1985.
