Wealthy local citizens financed the Gothic cathedral, backed by Emperor Sigismund. The infobox gives groundbreaking in 1378, though the text places construction after a fire around 1380, with the first record in 1402. The presbytery and completion date to 1508. No single architect is named, and the article credits different masters by phase.
It is a five-nave basilica, 197 feet (60 m) long and 118 feet (36 m) wide, of sandstone, with a transept forming a Greek cross. The north tower rises 194 feet (59 m), and the article gives 59.7 m in another passage. A neo-Gothic reconstruction from 1877 to 1896 was led mainly by Imre Steindl.
A restoration ran from 1980 to 1992. It became a National Cultural Monument in 1970, and it is the main church of the Archdiocese of Košice.
