The existing Slane Castle was built in the late 18th century. The article says the reconstruction dates back to 1785. William Burton Conyngham directed its construction, with his nephew, the 1st Marquess Conyngham. The architects were James Gandon, James Wyatt and Francis Johnston. Johnston also designed the Gothic gates on Mill Hill, east of the castle. The article gives no style or materials.
The Flemings owned the castle earlier, and the confiscations after the Williamite victory in 1688 displaced them. A fire gutted the eastern section facing the River Boyne in 1991, and the castle reopened in 2001 after a ten-year restoration.
U2 recorded The Unforgettable Fire here in 1984. The castle has been a concert venue since 1981, and the Conyngham family still lives there.
