Count Carl Gustaf Wrangel, a wealthy military commander, built the castle. Casper Vogell was the main designer, and Jean de la Vallée and Nicodemus Tessin the Elder were also involved. Building began in 1654. The infobox gives completion in 1676, but the text says it was never truly finished, and the Unfinished Hall was left as it stood in 1676. The style is Baroque, and the article says it was probably based on Ujazdów Castle in Warsaw.
After the Second World War the von Essen family converted part of it into a residence. The family sold the castle and contents to the government in 1967. The architect Ove Hidemark restored it in the 1970s using 17th-century materials and techniques.
A state agency runs it as a museum, and the article calls it the only European building with a complete, authentic 17th-century building site.
