Construction began in 1431 and ended in 1536 according to the infobox, while the text gives 1535. Juraj Dalmatinac led the work from 1441 until his death, which the article dates to 1473 in one place and 1475 in another. Niccolò di Giovanni Fiorentino oversaw it from 1475 to 1505.
The article calls the style Renaissance with Gothic elements, and one of the finest Gothic and Renaissance buildings on the Adriatic coast. It is built entirely of stone, with no mortar in the apse walls, using limestone from Brač and other Croatian islands. The three-aisled church measures 125 by 46 feet (38 by 14 m).
The baptistery, designed in the 1440s as a quatrefoil on the southern apse, has a vault of nine interlocking stone blocks. A sequence of seventy-four heads decorates the apses. UNESCO inscribed the cathedral in 2000.
