Nippon Railway opened Shibuya on March 1, 1885, as a stop on the Shinagawa Line, a predecessor of the Yamanote Line. The article names no architects or firms. Four operators run its six lines: JR East, Keio, Tokyu and Tokyo Metro.
A long redevelopment began with major renovations in 2013 and 2014, when the former main building, home to Tokyu's department store, was demolished. Shibuya Hikarie opened in 2012, and the 47-story Shibuya Scramble Square, about 755 feet (230 m) tall, opened in November 2019. The Saikyō Line platform moved beside the Yamanote platforms in May 2020, and the Yamanote lines were combined onto one island platform in January 2023.
The Shibuya River runs underground beside the tracks. A 2008 mural by Tarō Okamoto, The Myth of Tomorrow, hangs in the passage to the Keio Inokashira Line.
