Kohn Pedersen Fox designed the Shanghai World Financial Center for Mori Building Company. The foundation stone was laid on August 27, 1997, and work halted during the Asian financial crisis. On February 13, 2003, the height was raised to 1,614 feet (492 m) and 101 stories, from 460 m and 94 stories. Construction resumed in November 2003, and the tower opened in August 2008. The infobox style is Neo-Futurism.

The original design had a circular aperture 151 feet (46 m) wide. Protests said it resembled the Japanese flag, and KPF submitted a trapezoidal aperture on October 18, 2005. The tower is nicknamed the bottle opener.

Observation decks on the 94th, 97th and 100th floors sat at up to 1,555 feet (474 m) and closed permanently in 2023. The Park Hyatt filled floors 79 to 93. The cost was RMB 8.17 billion ($1.2 billion). It was the tallest building in China from 2007 to 2014.
