The Selimiye Mosque in Edirne was designed by Mimar Sinan for the Ottoman sultan Selim II. Building ran from 1568 to about 1574, and Selim II died in December 1574, before it was fully finished. The style is classical Ottoman, and the walls are cut stone and marble. Sinan considered it his masterpiece, the best work of his career.
The dome has an outer diameter of about 103 feet (31.3 m), and the article gives its height as about 138 feet (42 m), a figure it notes is disputed. Four minarets stand around the mosque, each 233 feet (70.89 m) tall.
The mosque anchors a social complex, or külliye. It includes the Dar'ül Kurra Medrese, now the Selimiye Foundation Museum, and the Dar-ül Hadis Medrese, now the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts. The complex also holds an elementary school and a covered market street, the arasta. UNESCO listed it in 2011.
