The earlier cathedral stood next to the Alcázar and was left in ruins after the Revolt of the Comuneros. Charles V ordered a new one on a different site. Juan Gil de Hontañón laid the first stone on June 8, 1525. The cloister and a 1483 door by Juan Guas were reused.

The article calls it one of the latest Gothic cathedrals in Europe, in a Flamboyant style. Three high naves and an ambulatory give an interior about 360 feet (109 m) long and 164 feet (50 m) wide, with vaults about 98 feet (30 m) high. The tower is almost 295 feet (90 m) tall.

Work ran in stages until 1685. Francisco Sabatini designed the neoclassical high altar, built from 1768 to 1775. The infobox gives a dedication on July 16, 1768, while the text says consecration on July 16, 1789.
