Šariš Castle crowns a cone-shaped hill about 1,870 feet (570 meters) above sea level, with a wide plateau at the top. The article says the castle site was permanently settled from the Neolithic to the fourth century and again from the tenth to the twelfth century. A new castle was built in the thirteenth century, and it appears in records as castrum Sarus in 1245.
For several centuries it served as the original county seat, and the former county and the region of Šariš take their name from it. Fire destroyed it in 1678.
The ruined Gothic and Renaissance-era castle keeps its gatehouses, perimeter walls and bastions, with a keep on a hillock and a major artillery bastion. The Municipality of Veľký Šariš owns it, and the civic association Rákociho cesta leads the restoration. It is on the Slovak national heritage list.
