Santa Maria della Pietà stands on the Riva degli Schiavoni in Venice, near the Doge's Palace. It was built as the chapel of the Ospedale della Pietà, a girls' orphanage and hospital run by the State of Venice. Giorgio Massari designed the Baroque church, which was built from 1745 to 1760 beside the site of an earlier church.
The interior is oval. The facade was left unfinished, with marble facing reaching only a third of the way up the columns, and it was completed in 1906 without the three roof statues originally planned. Giovanni Battista Tiepolo painted the ceilings, including Strength and Peace and the Triumph of Faith.
Vivaldi served as concert master at the Ospedale from 1703 to 1740. The church is Roman Catholic.
