Queen Sancha of Majorca and King Robert of Naples commissioned the double monastic complex, built from 1313 to 1340. The article names no original architect. The infobox calls the style Early Gothic with Romanesque elements. The church is 362 feet (110.5 m) long and 108 feet (33 m) wide, with the nave walls 156 feet (47.5 m) tall. It has no apse and nine chapels on each side.

Domenico Antonio Vaccaro led a Baroque refurbishment from 1742 to 1762. Allied bombing and fire on August 4, 1943 destroyed much of the interior decoration. A restoration completed in 1953 returned it to a Gothic look, which the article calls disputed.

It is a Catholic minor basilica with a Poor Clares monastery. It holds King Robert's tomb, and a museum.
