In 1582 Costanza Piccolomini d'Aragona, Duchess of Amalfi, left her palace and the church of San Sebastiano to the Theatines for a new church named for her patron, Saint Andrew. Work began around 1590 to designs by Giacomo della Porta and Pier Paolo Olivieri, and resumed by 1608 with a larger plan mainly by Carlo Maderno. The interior was completed by 1650.
Carlo Rainaldi built the Baroque facade between 1655 and 1663. The infobox lists the style as Renaissance, while the text describes a 17th-century Counter-Reformation church with a Baroque facade. The dome was long the third largest in Rome, after St. Peter's and the Pantheon.
Giovanni Lanfranco painted the dome fresco, completed in 1627. Domenichino painted the pendentives and the apse half-dome, and the article describes a dispute between the two artists. The first act of Puccini's Tosca is set here. The article gives no hours.
