San Giovanni in Bragora stands in the Castello district of Venice. It was founded in the early 8th century, allegedly by St. Magnus of Oderzo. The article places a rebuild under Doge Pietro III Candiano in the 9th century, to house alleged relics of St. John the Baptist, and another in 1178. It names no architect.
A renovation between 1475 and 1505 produced the current appearance. The church keeps a basilica plan, a trussed ceiling and a late-Gothic brick facade divided into three sections.
Cima da Conegliano painted the Baptism of Christ here in 1492. Pietro Barbo, the future Pope Paul II, and Antonio Vivaldi were baptized in the church. It is a Roman Catholic church.
