Andrea Palladio was asked for a new church model in 1565. The model was approved and the foundation stone laid in 1566. The church body was complete by about 1575, and Palladio died in 1580. The choir was built from 1580 to 1589 largely to his design. The facade began in 1599 and was completed in 1610, with Simone Sorella in charge of a contract that required Palladio's model.
The article calls the church classical Renaissance. Palladio layered two facades, a wide pediment over the nave and aisles and a narrower one on a giant order of engaged columns. The plan combines a long nave with a cruciform layout. It gives no measurements.
The first bell tower of 1467 collapsed in 1774, and the replacement was complete by 1791. Visitors reach the top by ramps or a lift. Tintoretto's The Last Supper hangs in the presbytery.
