The original church was a triple-nave Gothic design by Marino da Pisa. Doge Andrea Gritti laid the foundation stone of the rebuilding in 1534, and Jacopo Sansovino designed the new church in 1554, with advice from Fra Francesco Zorzi. The nave was roofed by 1554. The facade was built from 1564 to 1570 to Andrea Palladio's design, and Daniele Barbaro reportedly lobbied for the switch in 1562. The infobox says Gothic, while the text describes a sober Renaissance reconstruction.
The facade is white marble, and the interior has plain Istrian stone Doric pilasters. Zorzi planned the nave at nine paces wide and 27 long. The spire is 230 feet (70 m) high.
Baldassare Longhena modified the high altar in 1649. Venice in Peril restored the facade and the Grimani chapel in the 1990s.
