The founding is placed in the 4th century under Pope Sylvester I. Pope Gregory III restored it in 731, and John of Crema rebuilt it in 1123. Cardinal Scipione Borghese funded the 1626 reconstruction by Giovanni Battista Soria, who also made the baldachin, dated 1627 or 1641. Remains of the first church were discovered in 1907.
The bell tower is Romanesque, and the interior is Baroque with a coffered ceiling. Twenty-two granite columns of reused antique stone line the nave, and the floor is Cosmatesque. Crypt remains are reached by a staircase in the sacristy.
It is a minor basilica and titular church in Trastevere. The Trinitarian Order received it in the mid-1860s and hosts its General Curia there.
