The first cathedral, the Virgil Dom, was built from 767 to 774. A fire destroyed it in 842. Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau had the old basilica demolished and hired Vincenzo Scamozzi, but Santino Solari designed the present cathedral, substantially changing Scamozzi's plan. Markus Sittich von Hohenems laid the cornerstone in 1614, and it was consecrated on September 24, 1628.

The cathedral is Baroque, of dark gray stone with a bright Untersberg marble facade. It is 466 feet (142 m) long. The facade has two towers and a curved gable in three horizontal sections, and three bronze doors dating from 1957 and 1958. Arcades link it to the Residenz and St. Peter's Abbey around Domplatz.

Mozart was baptized in its 14th-century Gothic font on January 28, 1756. A bomb struck the central dome in World War II, and restoration was complete by 1959.
