Robert Guiscard started the foundation of Salerno Cathedral in 1076, during the episcopate of Alfano I. The infobox gives the building years as 1080 to 1085, and Pope Gregory VII consecrated it in 1084. The article does not name the original architect. It lists the styles as Romanesque, Norman and Byzantine.
The Arab-Norman bell tower dates from the mid-twelfth century and is 184 feet (56 meters) high. The portico has 28 ancient columns, and the bronze doors have 56 Byzantine-style panels. The crypt holds the remains of Saint Matthew, brought there in 954.
Domenico Fontana and his son Giulio restored the crypt from 1606 to 1608. Ferdinando Sanfelice remodeled the interior in the Baroque and Rococo manner in 1688. It is a minor basilica and a major tourist attraction.
