Jean-Baptiste Lepère designed the church and led its first construction phases. The first stone was laid in August 1824, and work stopped repeatedly, especially after the 1830 Revolution, for lack of funds. His son-in-law Jacques Ignace Hittorff took over in 1831, modified the plans and added the two bell towers. The infobox credits only Hittorff. The church opened for worship on October 25, 1844. The style is neoclassical, on a basilican plan, with a portico of twelve Ionic columns.
Hippolyte Flandrin painted the frieze with 235 figures from 1848 to 1853, and Bouguereau decorated the Lady Chapel. Cavaillé-Coll built the organ in 1852. The article gives no building dimensions or masonry materials.
Shells from the Paris Commune struck the towers and terrace. It is an active Catholic parish church.
