The Senate of the Dubrovnik Republic commissioned the church as a votive offering, a sign of gratitude for sparing the city from greater destruction. Petar Andrijić of Korčula was the architect. Work began in 1520 and ended in 1528. An earthquake on May 17, 1520 killed about 20 people. The style is Renaissance with Gothic features.

It has a single nave under a Gothic cross-ribbed vault, with pointed Gothic side windows. The facade has a Renaissance portal with a three-leaf semicircular top, a semicircular apse, and a monumental inscription above the entrance. The article gives no materials or dimensions.

The earthquake of 1667 killed some 5,000 citizens, but the church survived it in its original form. It is an active Roman Catholic church.
