Stepan Kurkchyan designed the cathedral, and Catholicos Vazgen I initiated construction. Richard Alexander Manoogian and Louise Manoogian Simone funded the main church. Catholicos Karekin I blessed the groundbreaking on April 7, 1997. It was consecrated on September 23, 2001, the 1700th anniversary of Christianity as Armenia's state religion.

The walls are orange tufa from Ani, and the article calls the style Armenian. The main church seats 1,700, and each of the two chapels seats 150. A belfry with more than 30 arches stands at the entrance. The infobox gives a maximum height of 200 feet (60 m), while the text gives 177 feet (54 m) to the top of the cross.

The complex covers about 3,822 m², roughly 41,000 square feet. It stands on Tigran Mets Avenue beside General Andranik metro station.
