Saint-François-Xavier is a Roman Catholic parish church in Paris's 7th arrondissement. A chapel built from 1683 to 1689 for a seminary that trained missionaries became too small, so construction of a new church began in 1861 as part of Napoleon III's church-building program. Adrien Lusson began as architect, and Joseph Uchard took over, having Haussmann's planners widen the west front to allow for a portal and towers. It was consecrated on May 23, 1894.
Italian Renaissance basilicas were the model. An iron frame, hidden by stone walls, allowed thinner walls, more interior space and larger windows. Charles Lemeire painted the cupola in Neo-Byzantine style with the twelve apostles.
Its best-known work is Tintoretto's The Last Supper (1559), brought to Paris in 1865. Henry Lerolle's painting The Organ Rehearsal (1885) depicts the church's organ.
