The article says the architects are unknown. It links the design to Jean Delamarre or Pierre Lemercier, who worked at Saint-Maclou in Pontoise, and suggests Domenico da Cortona. Construction began in 1532. The infobox gives completion in 1633 and the text says work continued until 1632. Jean-François de Gondi consecrated the church in 1637, and it was not entirely finished until 1640.

The structure is Flamboyant Gothic, with flying buttresses and a Gothic apse, while the interior details are Renaissance and classical, using the Doric, Ionic and Corinthian orders. The church is 344 feet (105 m) long and 110 feet (33.45 m) high to the vaults.

The classical west facade is unfinished, with one tower. Androuet du Cerceau's 16th-century design was never built, and the facade was rebuilt in 1754 under Jean Mansart de Jouy. The organ has about 8,000 pipes and 101 stops. The church stands near the former Les Halles market.
