Félix Olivier designed the Saigon Opera House, also called the Municipal Theatre, in Ho Chi Minh City. Construction began in 1898 on the site of an earlier theatre, and Ernest Guichard and Eugène Ferret supervised the work in 1900. It was completed and opened on January 1, 1900. The article calls the style flamboyant, influenced by the French Third Republic, and an example of French Colonial architecture. The facade is said to be shaped like the Petit Palais, built in France the same year. It seats 500 today but once held up to 1,800.
Allied air attacks damaged the building in 1944. In the mid-1950s it became the seat of the National Assembly of South Vietnam, and it was restored as a theatre in 1976.
