Sacred Heart Cathedral in New Delhi was designed by Henry Medd, a British architect. Construction began in 1930 and was financed by colonial officers of the British Empire. The article calls it one of the oldest church buildings in New Delhi.
The design is based on Italian architecture. A facade of white pillars supports the canopy over the entrance, and circular arcaded turrets rise above the roof on each side of the porch. Inside are a curved roof, polished stone floors and broad arches. Behind the marble altar in the apse is a large fresco of the Last Supper. A side chapel contains a large crucifix and a statue of the Virgin Mary.
The cathedral, with St. Columba's School and the Convent of Jesus and Mary school, occupies about 14 acres. Masses are held in English, Malayalam and Hindi.
