The Danish firm schmidt hammer lassen designed the Black Diamond extension, which opened in 1999. It stands on Slotsholmen, on the Copenhagen harbor, beside the older library building. The article gives no construction dates, dimensions or style, so the style here is an assumption.
The building is clad in black marble and glass, which gives it the name. Its two black cubes tilt slightly over the street. Between them is an eight-story atrium with white, wave-shaped walls and balconies on every floor. The glass outer wall looks over the water toward Christianshavn.
Three bridges link it to the old library. The large one spans the road, holds the circulation desk and carries a ceiling painting by Per Kirkeby. The extension also houses a concert hall. The older building on Slotsholmen was built in 1906 by Hans Jørgen Holm. Its central hall copies Charlemagne's Palace Chapel in Aachen.
