Edgar de Oliveira da Fonseca designed the cathedral, which broke ground in 1964 and was completed in 1979. The article calls it modernist and says the design draws on Mayan pyramid architecture. The article names no client and no materials.

The building is conical, 348 feet (106 m) across outside and 315 feet (96 m) inside, with a height of 246 feet (75 m). The interior covers 86,000 square feet (8,000 m²). Four rectilinear stained glass windows rise 210 feet (64 m) from floor to ceiling.

The infobox gives a capacity of 20,000, while the text gives about 5,000 seats and standing room for 20,000. It is the seat of the Archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro. The article gives no opening hours.
