Riegersburg Castle is a medieval hill castle built on an extinct volcanic neck. Construction began before 1138, and the history begins in 1122, when the first known knight lived there. The walls use ancient basalt from the hill itself. The article says the castle has about 3 kilometers of walls, 5 gates, 2 moats and 108 rooms. Baroness Katharina Elisabeth von Wechsler finished the castle between 1637 and 1653, and the Wenzel Gate is dated 1653. It names no architect.

In the 17th century the castle sheltered thousands of local people during conflicts with the Ottoman Empire and the Hungarians. Johann Josef von Liechtenstein bought it in 1822, and the princely family of Liechtenstein still owns it.

It operates as a museum, and 25 of the 108 rooms are open to visitors.
