King Manuel I ordered the Ribeira Palace built in Lisbon, and groundwork began in 1498. The architect Diogo de Arruda worked on the building between 1508 and 1510.
Later, during the Philippine period, the architect Filipe Terço remodeled the palace. That work ran from 1580 to 1583 and changed the building that Manuel's builders had left. The palace therefore carried the marks of at least two separate building campaigns, decades apart, under different rulers and different designers.
The great earthquake of 1755 destroyed the palace, and it was never rebuilt. It is now a lost landmark, known from the record of what stood there rather than from any surviving structure.
