Construction of the Quito Metropolitan Cathedral began in 1535, and the building became a cathedral when the Bishopric of Quito was created in 1545. The stone building rose from 1562 to 1565, with Antonio García named for that work, and it was consecrated in 1572. The infobox lists completion in 1799.
The infobox gives its styles as Baroque, Gothic-Mudéjar and Neoclassical. It has three naves with pointed arches, cedar panelling and a coffered ceiling with Mudéjar influence. The Carondelet Arch stands on the plaza side, and three domes are covered in green glazed ceramic.
The 1660 eruption of Pichincha and the earthquakes of 1755 and 1797 damaged the building. It is part of the City of Quito, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1978.
