The Pyramid of the Sun at Teotihuacan was built about 200 AD in two phases. The first brought it nearly to its current size, and the second produced its finished form. The city was abandoned about 750 AD. The name comes from the Aztecs, and the Teotihuacanos' own name for it is unknown.
The article gives conflicting dimensions. Its history section says 738 feet (225 m) across and 246 feet (75 m) high. The infobox gives a height of 215 feet (65.5 m), and a table gives 233 feet (71.17 m). The volume is about 42 million cubic feet (1.18 million m³), calculated from a perfect square base. Lime plaster painted with murals once covered it.
In 1971 Ernesto Taboada found an entrance to a cave about 20 feet (6 m) beneath the center. It was first thought a natural lava tube, but recent excavations suggest it is man-made. The pyramid lies along the Avenue of the Dead.
