Djoser of the Third Dynasty built the pyramid in the 27th century BC, with the infobox giving about 2667 to 2648 BC. Most Egyptologists credit the architect Imhotep. It began as a mastaba and grew in stages to a four-step pyramid, then a six-step one, finally cased in fine white Tura limestone.

The article gives the height as 205 feet (62.5 m), with some sources giving 200 feet (60 m). The base is 397 by 358 feet (121 by 109 m). The substructure is nearly 3.7 miles (6 km) of galleries and chambers around a central shaft 23 feet (7 m) square and 92 feet (28 m) deep. The granite burial vault is sealed with a 3.5-ton block.

The enclosure wall is 34 feet (10.5 m) high and over a mile (1.6 km) long, with 1,680 niches. A 14-year restoration ended with a reopening to visitors in March 2020. UNESCO inscribed the site in 1979.
