Archbishop of Esztergom József Batthyány, Primate of the Kingdom of Hungary, commissioned the Primate's Palace in Bratislava. Melchior Hefele was the architect. The infobox gives 1777 to 1781 for construction, and the article text gives 1778 to 1781. The infobox calls the style Classicist, and the text calls it neoclassical.

In 1805 the fourth Peace of Pressburg was signed in the Hall of Mirrors, ending the War of the Third Coalition. Sessions of the Hungarian Diet were opened here. In 1903, six tapestries depicting Hero and Leander, woven at Mortlake in the 1630s, were found behind a wall during reconstruction.

The city of Bratislava bought the palace in 1903, and it is now the seat of the Mayor of Bratislava. It is open to the public as a tourist attraction.
