Stanisław Koniecpolski, Crown Great Hetman, began construction in 1643 with Constantino Tencalla as architect, and died in 1646 before completion. The early palace was baroque, modeled on northern Italian and Genoese residences. The Radziwiłł family owned it from 1674 for 144 years.
Chrystian Piotr Aigner rebuilt it in classicist style from 1818, remodeling the main body in the Corinthian order. A fire in 1852 burned it almost to the ground, and Alfons Kropiwnicki rebuilt it by 1856.
Juliusz Nagórski and Jan Łukasik reconstructed it in 1941 to 1942 as a Deutsches Haus. It survived the 1944 Warsaw Uprising, and Antoni Brusche and Antoni Jawornicki carried out the postwar reconstruction. The Polish government owns it, and it has been a presidential seat since July 1994.
