The first church was built in the second half of the 10th century, probably around the time of Mieszko I's baptism, and became a cathedral in 968. The article names no architect. It lasted about 70 years before a pagan reaction and a raid by Bretislav I, and was rebuilt in the Romanesque style. The first church was about 157 feet (48 m) long.

The Gothic rebuild came in the 14th and 15th centuries and added a crown of chapels. A fire in 1622 led to a Baroque renovation, and a fire in 1772 led to a Neo-Classical rebuild.

A fire on February 15, 1945, during the Battle of Posen, led conservators to restore the Gothic style, and it reopened on June 29, 1956. It stands on Ostrów Tumski island and belongs to the Archdiocese of Poznań.
