Powderham Castle, 6 miles (9.7 kilometers) south of Exeter, is the seat of the Earls of Devon. Sir Philip Courtenay, who died in 1406, built the medieval core some time after 1390. The article calls it a fortified manor house rather than a true castle, and the name probably dates from the seventeenth century or later. The infobox lists a Gothic style.

The Marble Hall was completed in 1755 and holds a longcase clock 14 feet (4.3 meters) high. Charles Fowler designed the gatehouse, built from 1845 to 1847, and the Victorian dining hall.

In 1455 the 5th Earl of Devon besieged it for two months. Royalists held it in 1645 and 1646, until Parliamentarian Robert Hammond captured it and left it badly damaged. It is a family home open for guided tours and is Grade I listed.
