An earlier castle, Castle Argeș, was built near the start of the 13th century. Vlad the Impaler repaired and consolidated the structure in 1459 and made it one of his main fortresses, while the infobox gives a construction start of 1453. The article names no architect or style.
Vlad rebuilt the castle on the left bank of the river with stones from the older Castle Poenari on the right bank. It stands on a mountain plateau and is reached by 1,480 concrete stairs. The infobox gives a diameter of 197 feet (60 m).
It was abandoned in the first half of the 16th century and in ruins by the 17th. A landslide after an earthquake on January 13, 1913 brought down parts of it, and earthquakes in 1940 and 1977 were followed by slight repairs. The Argeș County Museum has administered it since 2009.
