Henry Janeway Hardenbergh designed the 1907 hotel after being hired in 1905 to add five stories to the existing hotel, but the owners rebuilt it entirely. Construction began on July 1, 1905, and it opened on October 1, 1907 at a cost of $12.5 million. The style is a French Renaissance château.

The base is rusticated marble, the upper stories are white brick with terracotta, and the top is a green tiled mansard roof with copper trim. The height is 252 feet (76.79 m). Warren and Wetmore designed the 1919 annex and interiors including the Terrace Room, and Schultze & Weaver redesigned the ballroom in 1929.

The 2005 to 2008 renovation, with Annabelle Selldorf, created 282 hotel rooms and 181 condominiums. The infobox gives 18 stories, while the penthouse is on floors 19 to 21. Annex dates vary, 1919 to 1921 and 1919 to 1922.
