The Pinkas Synagogue stands at Široká 3 in Prague's Josefov district. Aharon Meshulam Horowitz founded it, and it was completed in 1535 after a private oratory stood on the site by 1492. Juda Coref de Herz designed the Renaissance annex, added from 1607 to 1625. The vault is late Gothic with Renaissance ornament, and the portal is Renaissance. The floor sits below ground level, so flooding was a recurring problem. In 1860 the floor was raised about 5 feet (1.5 meters), and a reconstruction from 1950 to 1954 restored the original level.
Painters Václav Boštík and Jiří John designed the memorial, which opened to the public in 1960.
The walls bear the names of 77,297 Bohemian and Moravian Jewish victims of the Shoah, arranged by community. The Jewish Museum in Prague administers it.
