Guillaume Le Vasseur de Beauplan built the castle for the Grand Crown Hetman Stanisław Koniecpolski on the site of an older fortress. The article does not establish who designed it, but says it is most probably the work of the Italian architect Andrea dell'Aqua. Construction took place from 1635 to 1640, though the infobox gives only 1635.
The article calls it a residential castle-fortress in the palazzo in fortezza style. It sits on a hillside above the Styr valley, on an open square plan with sides of nearly 330 feet (100 m), with a moat and bastions. It was built of brick and stone, and a third floor was added in the 18th century.
The castle passed to the Sobieski family in 1682 and was sold to the Rzewuskis in 1725. A fire in February 1956 lasted about three weeks and left mostly walls. It served as a sanitarium in the Soviet era, and a gallery bought it in 1997.
