The Lords of Medlov founded the castle, probably between 1270 and 1285, and the Pernštejn family took its name from it. The article names no builder or architect. The core was the Barborka Tower, a palace and a courtyard. A large round tower was added in the mid-15th century, and from the 15th to 17th centuries the fortifications were extended with moats, a barbican and a Renaissance bastion. William II's reconstruction added Renaissance elements. The castle is built into a rock that rises through the second floor, and marble-like stone frames the doors and windows.
The barbican walls are about 10 feet (3 m) thick, and the Barborka Tower is round and five stories tall. A Baroque chapel was built in 1716. The Pernštejns sold the property in 1596.
The state owns it, and it has been conserved for visitors. Nosferatu (2024) was filmed there.
