The Pergamon Museum on Berlin's Museum Island was built from 1910 to 1930 by order of Emperor Wilhelm II. Alfred Messel began designing the large three-wing building in 1906. After his death in 1909, his friend Ludwig Hoffmann took charge. The style is Stripped Classicism.

Its main exhibits include the Pergamon Altar, the Market Gate of Miletus, and the Ishtar Gate with the Processional Way of Babylon. Under Oswald Mathias Ungers's redevelopment plan, the entrance building in the Court of Honor will be replaced with a fourth wing.

Museum Island was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1999. The museum was severely damaged in air raids at the end of the Second World War. It was partly closed for renovation from September 2014 and fully closed to visitors in October 2023. Its North Wing is expected to reopen in 2027, and the museum may remain mostly closed until between 2037 and 2043.
