Alexandre Vallaury, a French-Ottoman architect, designed the hotel. Construction began in 1892, and it opened in 1895 with a grand ball. The article names no original client. It describes a blend of neoclassical, Art Nouveau and oriental styles, with a neoclassical exterior and mostly oriental interiors, especially the ballroom. Art Nouveau features appear around the elevator and the coffee house. It gives no materials or dimensions.

The article says it was the first building in the Ottoman Empire powered by electricity, apart from the imperial palaces, and had the first electric elevator in Constantinople. It closed in 2006 for a restoration of 23 million euros and reopened on September 1, 2010.

It has 115 rooms and 16 suites in the Tepebaşı neighborhood of Pera. It is a listed historic building under Turkish law.
