King Carol I of Romania commissioned the castle. The German architect Johannes Schultz won the design competition and Carol Benesch led the works, and the Czech architect Karel Liman made later additions from 1893 to 1914 and designed the towers. The foundation was laid in 1873, it was inaugurated in 1883, and the Hall of Honour was finished in 1911.

The article calls the style Neo-Renaissance blended with Gothic Revival, with mostly Baroque-influenced interiors. The central tower is 217 feet (66 m) tall, and the floor plan covers 34,000 square feet (3,200 m²). There are over 170 rooms. The article says it was the first castle powered fully by locally produced electricity.

It has been a museum since 1953. The article gives opening times of Wednesday to Sunday, 9 am to 5 pm, with timed tickets and a closure in November.
