The Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul in Pécs has foundations from the Roman period, around the 4th century. An early Christian basilica followed in the 8th or 9th century. Italian architects, unnamed in the article, took part in a Romanesque basilica built after a great fire in 1064. Medieval additions included two lateral towers and Gothic chapels. The building was damaged during the Turkish occupation, which lasted from 1543 to 1686.
The Viennese architect Friedrich von Schmidt designed the reconstruction of 1882 to 1891, in a Neo-Romanesque style. The article says it faithfully fulfilled his plans. The building is about 230 feet (70 m) long and 72 feet (22 m) wide, with towers rising up to 197 feet (60 m).
It is the active cathedral of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Pécs.
