Work on Pavia Cathedral began in 1488. Donato Bramante is credited with the plan and the crypt, which was completed in 1492. Cristoforo Rocchi began the work, and Giovanni Antonio Amadeo and Gian Giacomo Dolcebuono soon replaced him. The article says Leonardo da Vinci is known to have contributed. It stands on the site of two Romanesque churches.

The plan is a Greek cross about 276 feet (84 meters) across, one of the largest central-plan buildings in northern Italy. The octagonal dome, designed by Carlo Maciachini, is 318 feet (97 meters) tall and the fourth largest in Italy. The article calls the style Renaissance, with Baroque additions.

The dome was completed in 1885 and partly collapsed the same year. The transept arms were built in 1930 using reinforced concrete.
