A fire in 1662 destroyed the earlier church, and the present cathedral was built from 1668 to 1693, although the introduction says 1688. Churches have stood on the site since 730. Carlo Lurago made the overall plan, Giovanni Battista Carlone did the interior decoration, and Carpoforo Tencalla painted the frescoes. The style is Baroque. Only the late Gothic eastern end of the old church survives. The cathedral is about 328 feet (100 m) long.

Its organ has 17,774 pipes and 233 registers, played from a five-manual console, and the article calls it the largest church organ outside the United States. That claim is marked as needing a citation. Eight bells hang in the towers, the largest being the Pummerin, cast in 1952.

It is the seat of the Bishop of Passau. The article gives no heritage status.
