The infobox gives the establishment of the temple as the 5th century, and the text says its existence is recorded as early as 400. The current form was renovated in 1692 after earlier structures were affected by termites and earthquakes. Ananta Malla also renovated the temple by adding a roof, but the article gives no date.

It is a pagoda-style temple in Newari architecture, rising about 76 feet (23 m) from base to pinnacle on a square base platform. It has two-level roofs of copper with gold covering, four main doors covered with silver sheets, and a gold pinnacle.

The complex stands on the banks of the sacred Bagmati River at 2,680 feet (817 m) and covers 246 hectares (608 acres). The infobox lists 519 pagodas, while the text describes 518 mini-temples plus the principal temple. UNESCO designated it a World Heritage Site in 1979. The article gives no access rules.
