The Brignole-Sale family built the palace, with construction starting in 1675, though the text says it was built in 1675. The article names no architect, dimensions or materials. The infobox gives the style as Mannerist.

In 1874 the last descendant, Duchess Maria Brignole Sale, bequeathed it to the Municipality of Genoa. It now operates as a house museum, the Strada Nuova Museum, with Palazzo Bianco and Palazzo Doria Tursi in the Musei di Strada Nuova. After three years of renovation it reopened in June 2022.

It stands at 5 Via Garibaldi and belongs to the UNESCO site Genoa: Le Strade Nuove and the system of the Palazzi dei Rolli, inscribed in 2006. The article says it was not one of the 163 Palazzi dei Rolli.
